Who draws the map?, acius, 2003-04-01 22:15:37
Sure, would be nice to have it auto-display, but we don't even have the wizard showmap working yet.
Coco, athenon, 2003-04-06 06:02:31
What about Coco?
Coco is ugly, allaryin, 2003-04-09 14:51:04
The showmap command's output is not designed for normal human consumption at the moment. It was largely implemented as a way of making sure that the maps were actually going together correctly, so, yes, you can showmap the coco area and get something, but it's not very pretty.
Were we to do something like this for players, it would have to be streamlined quite a bit. Mostly, it's just a case of actually doing it, I don't think it would be too difficult... anyone up to making a nicer display out of our existant utility?

Player maps, acius, 2003-07-07 16:18:52
I think we should make the players draw their own ASCII art maps (or ASCII art of anything else they want). Is the existing code for a piece of paper sufficient to do this, or should we extend it?
Making maps is kind of fun. If there is a way to make copies of them, so much the better.

paper, malap, 2003-07-07 20:23:26
It is possible with existing paper (you can edit line-by-line, etc) but it would be a pain in the butt. A specialized interface would be very nice if someone would like to put their hand up.
Generic canvas object, acius, 2003-09-18 23:58:49
I'd like to see a 'canvas' object -- with a 'pencil' (or similar) you could do gray scale ASCII art, and if you get paints, you can add color -- but various colors would require various types of paint, some harder to get than others.
The ability to copy an existing canvas exactly would make distribution of maps, works of art, billboards, signs, etc. all possible.
If someone wants to pick up on this, it'd be pretty valuable.

craft printing press, allaryin, 2004-07-27 05:49:33
Woo! It only requires a few pounds of lead, a good stack of wood, some brass, a bit of string, and a mystical amulet that grants the owner knowledge of such things...
But the ability to scribe copies of normal written documents should be fairly easy to gain. The ability to copy artwork by hand probably requires a bit of painting skill.
Hmm, possibly we allow people to engrave printing plates? :)
(flashback to Japanese history classes... and a certain Terry Pratchett book)
