electricity->lightning?, sora, 2006-06-20 16:29:54
No help for topic "electricity->lightning?".
sigh, allaryin, 2006-07-18 18:26:24
Yeah. We really need to finish standardizing this one. The short version of the current situation is:
- lightning = one of the planes of mana, ergo, name of the appropriate skill
- electricity = longstanding name for the type of damage typically inflicted by lightning spells (and other, not necessarily lightning-related causes)
- shock = longstanding (at least to me) name for spells that inflict lightning damage and frequently paralysis
Mumble. I think lots of people have had problems keeping track of the differences here. The only opinion I have remaining on the subject is that the plane should be called 'lightning' (thematical reasons, don'cha know?) and the damage type should not.

I would like the plane of lightning renamed the plane of electricity.
Lightning is an atmospheric phenomenon that is a specialized version of electricity, whereas electricity is more generic.
Or, put anohterway, all lightning is electricity, but not all electricity is lightning. As the plane of mana is the source, it ought to be given the all encompassing term "electricity" as opposed to the narrower "lighting", which incidentally by it self implies connections to the air and water, which are themselves separate planes. Considering we call it "electrical" mana, and not "lightning" manna, I think the name of the plane should reflect the name of the mana that comes from it.
Dunno if you can do this though...if it's hard coded already it might be too painful to switch.
my two cents, hoping they're rare indian head pennies.

Or how 'bout..., garvin, 2006-09-14 00:36:40
the plane of energy? Or the plane of Storms? Or the plane of bolts?
or volts?
My whole thing is that "Lightning/Electricity/Shock" is not considered one of the four classical elements: Earth, Wind and Fire, and water. So it can be whatever al wants it to be, called, implemented, and otherwise.

I am well aware that Al and the other admins hold final and absolute authority over this, and any other game related matter.
Which is why I'm making suggestions, not demands.
In DND, there are five types of damage:
Electricity, cold, fire, sonic, and acid.
...
Oh, guess Final Fantasy has a counterpoint.
The materia elements are Wind, Gravity, *Lightning*, Water, Holy, Dark, Earth, Fire, Ice, Poison.
