channel +<name f a new channel> doesn't work

Channel does not exist
channel added.
channel added.
but, zaecus, 2005-05-29 14:56:46
The channel was not actually added...
that's the problem, garvin, 2005-05-29 19:35:22
the + call was supposed to create the new channel if the channel doesn't yet exist AND add it to your list of channels. then you just type the name to speak on the channel.
Once there is no one left on the channel, as i understand, the channel is deleted. I'm wondering if the channelis being created in the first place. It says it was added. But if it was created, was anyone ever put in the channel. Otherwise it would create and delete in one check.

Relevancy, athenon, 2006-08-10 14:54:24
I'm fairly certain this thread is no longer relevant. I've added channels since this thread's last reply and it's worked like a dream. Closing :P
Apologies if it is fixed, but, zaecus, 2006-08-10 18:57:33
This was a player only problem. It didn't affect admins and wizzes.
This could still be a problem, acius, 2006-08-10 21:23:32
Channel behavior is different for players vs. wizards. Wizards use channels pretty heavily for debugging, but players are a bit more limited (players shouldn't be listening to the system message channels, and there may be some other restrictions on what channels can be added).
So yeah, Ath, make sure to test this with a testchar before marking it closed.

Yeah, icemaester can add stuff and talk in it just fine - if someone can replicate, please reply.

I looked at both the daemon and the client... and it looks like nothing should be preventing a player from creating new channels. Ath was able to do so with his testchar (and there are no checks to give testchars special privs in the chat system).
One restriction that people should be aware of though:
You cannot create a channel if a command of the same name already exists. This includes wiz and soul commands - as well as commands written onto objects in your inventory (like 'turn' is written onto spellbooks, etc...).
Anyhow. Giving this a slow close in case somebody has a specific problem they'd like addressed here. We're not seeing any at the moment.

Side-Effect, athenon, 2006-08-14 22:01:23
Ok, Al and I have determined that this is the side effect of a feature that has been planned but not implemented. The idea is that players will eventually have to do something extra to create channels - buy them from an npc possibly. However, when they do, they will have admin priveleges on the channel.
As Al noted, this is basically the backburner of backburners. Since we don't have a "backburner of backburners" forum, I'll just send it to the regular backburner :)
