Ping was our first very complex soul command. I wrote it in a fit of silliness many years ago. It acted similarly to the standard unix command - it sent a short message to the target player every few seconds until they either 'ack'ed in response or until their response timed out.
The unix command ping is used to determine response time in network communication with a remote host.
