spell mend: would allow us to mend unbroken items so that they would last longer
Good Idea, athenon, 2004-07-20 20:21:15
That's a pretty good idea, however, (in my opinion), "mend" means "fix", and we wouldn't want to break the rule of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Perhaps "enhance" or "strengthen"? I know those aren't good, but I can't think of anything better off the top of my head :P
I don't agree, acius, 2004-07-27 15:37:55
Mend doesn't mean the same thing as fix, exactly; in particular, it's the word that's used specifically for clothing. Clothing does not have to be completely unwearable to be mended (in fact, you never refer to clothing as being "broken" in the first place). Mending can be as simple as reinforcing a seam or putting a patch of thick fabric over a thin spot. So I don't have any problems with calling it "mend."

I think I posted a while back about how I didn't think it should say clothing was "Broken" And I stand by that :) I also think the mend spell would be a good idea.

Ok, we have really two different spell options here.

First off, we have a spell that makes minor repairs to an unbroken item, thus keeping it from breaking in the first place.

Second, we have a spell that repairs a broken item back into usable condition, but only barely.

Honestly, I don't particularly care for either option because this is the sort of thing that should really be done by craftsmen, not by spellcasters. But... I admit that it is the sort of spell that mages would have developed.

Considering that most wizards what don't live in castles full of servants tend to be more shabby individuals (and many who do live surrounded by servants - UU Faculty and Students)... I am inclined to make the spell function in the seciond fashion as opposed to the first, thus, your hat is wearable after performing the simple spell, but it's never going to look nice until you scrape together the money to take it to a tailor for some real repairs.
