more crafts (painting, cooking, scultping).
new crafts, malap, 2004-03-02 21:18:01
The biggest block on new crafts and such is figuring out how they'd work. If folks have ideas they really want to see, the best thing to do is to give us some concrete examples.

For cooking, this'd be a few recipes and how you'd work them. The best way to do the second part is to write what it would look like to a player. Thread 90 has a decent example of this -- butcher exists now because a player suggested it and made a good case for it.

Thats all we have to do to get a wizards attention? cool. Perhaps painting a shield? Here is how I think it could look
Things in < are what the player types. things in ( are just notes from me.

<paint shield>
What color would you like to paint the small shield? (they could be a list of appropriate colors)

<blue>
Okay the shield will be painted blue. Do you want it to be a solid color or a pattern? (I don't know how player created pattern would work so I think It might be easier ATM to have preloaded pattern instead of custom patterns)

<pattern>
Okay. Please select a pattern. (the patterns would be given a number and displayed)

< pattern 2>
Okay the shield will be painted blue with the second pattern. It will look like this (then a picture of the new shield) If this is okay type finish to paint the shield

< finish >

Does that sound decent? I will have to think some more about the paint itself but I have time. So You will probably be hearing back from me on that.

You would need a colored fruit. Lets a say plum. Maybe 1 plum and some water I have no idea how to make paint. But if you have the material you should just be able to craft it.

<craft purple paint> (then it would check to see if you have the materials
you craft the purple paint

Simple enough. You might need a brush to paint something. But if you don't need a knife to skin something... But if you insist
You would need a pelt since you cant just get hair. So of course the pelt would have to be a hairy pelt. like rabbits or bears any animal with hair. It shouldn't work with a dragon skin because it has no hair well as far as I know. and like 1 unit of wood.

<craft paint brush>

You craft the paint brush

http://www.ceu.hu/medstud/manual/MMM/pigments.html is a good link with some info on where paint pigments came from. Seems like a good candidate for an ingredient in paint is eggs, of all things, along with lead.
Another good paint site, acius, 2004-03-03 01:43:59
It's a bit heavy on artistic interpretation of things, but with a little digging there's more info on how the actual paints were made:

There isn't much lapis lazuli in the mud. But maybe you should be able to ground fruits into powder. That would make it more realistic.
