That's trophies, right?, focker, 2004-01-22 17:26:36
Trophies made out of animals you kill... Right?
Anyway, yeah, I like this idea. But I think that if this is going to happen (even--*especially*--if it isn't), the problem with different bear skins not differentiating between eachother. Like, if I kill a bear, a grizzly bear, and the dire bear and skin them all, my inventory will just say I have "3 bear skins" instead of "1 bear skin, 1 grizzly bear skin, 1 dire bear skin" or whatever. If nothing else, I'd like to be able to keep a dire bear's skin as a trophy.

new and improved butchering, allaryin, 2004-08-04 09:37:24
With my finally rolling out the butchering skill (that, for the record, has been a valid skill since the day I started work on the system), I am planning on making animal products much more interesting - this week.
The 'skin' and 'butcher' verbs will actually be combined into a single command that will take time, will require you to hold a knife, and will make multiple butchering checks.
Depending on which (and how many) checks you pass, the yield from different kills will be vastly different. I hope to make different animal corpses actually worth different amounts. It will also be easier to clean a bunny or a fish than it will be to render a dragon down into its constituent parts.
Butcher a rabbit, get one pelt and one unit of meat, possibly a foot :P
Butcher a bear, get one numerous units of meat as well as one stinking huge pelt that will eventually make more units of leather than one bunny skin, possibly get teeth, claws, and some bones out of the deal.
Butcher a giant scorpion, get a few units of insect carapace, its claws, and the stinger.

oh, taxidermy :), allaryin, 2004-08-04 09:40:17
As far as being able to preserve whole corpses (or heads) as trophies... I think that'll have to wait a while. We don't have any support for wall hangings, and I really don't feel like letting everybody fill their houses with stuffed bears any time soon.
When (if) taxidermy itself is ever actually implemented, there will be chemicals required in the process that one must acquire from an alchemist who in turn produced them from products they received from various sources.
