Jails...
two things, allaryin, 2003-09-30 22:28:35
There are two sorts of jails one might encounter in a mud.

The first is a room from which it is difficult to leave for some IC purpose. These, I expect players will eventually be able to build, but I don't imagine that we will be seeing them for any time soon, especially given the lack of IC criminal prosecution and warfare we have going on right now, eh?

The second type is a sort of punishment imposed by wizards on a system. Given a 'jail' command or something, a sufficiently high-level wiz is typically able to emit an embarrasing message to the mud at large and transport the offending player to a location where they are completely unable to communicate with the outside world but can still hear chat lines. Jail sentences tend to last for several minutes up to an hour of login time.

I don't see any reason to impose the second one any time this year. If the admin decide that we need a cooler to dump people into, we can do it perfectly well w/o much preparation at all. In fact, next time somebody annoys me, I'm going to stuff them in a box and shake it.
Kriatorr's amulet, zarylse, 2003-10-01 21:22:09
Kri gave me a clone of his amulet, which is a very pretty jail cell. Wizards, check it out. Players, I hope ya don't get stuck in one. :)

If I get mad at someone for one reason o another and lead the into my shack and lock them in.... Would I get expelled from the mud?
I don't *think* so, acius, 2003-11-17 10:37:29
For one thing, the quickest way out of a player-made prison is to die, which is currently only achievable by deliberately starving (painfully slow, but very possible). For another thing, you have to be fairly gullible for this trick to work, though I can see it happening with a bit of clever social engineering. Most importantly, there is no rule against you doing it, excepting possibly rule 1, so the real person to ask is Al, who is by far the most finicky of the admins regarding what is acceptable MUD behavior. Maybe he'll post.
Yes the could die, aeao, 2003-11-20 22:50:55
But it would make them think twice before doing what ever they did again...

Ok, looking through ancient posts is fun ;)

My thoughts on jails.

We allow governments to build jails. We allow non-lethal combat. City guards will give you a chance to surrender when they attack you.

Surrendering takes(teleports) you to jail where you are stripped of weapons and magical items for a duration based on the length of your outstanding warrant list. You may pay bail in stead of waiting the time. Bail is not cheap.

Any attempt to perform magic while incarcerated will be dealt with severely. The guards will probably flog you in order to interrupt the spell, and will increase the length of your visit.

When you are released, your outstanding crimes are forgiven and your posessions are returned to you.

Rogue types will probably be able to bust people out of jail.
